The guidelines and policies below apply to students who enrolled at the University of Maryland, a University System of Maryland four-year institution or a Maryland community college in Fall 2027 or after.
Students who were enrolled at the University of Maryland, a University System of Maryland school or a Maryland community college prior to Fall 2027 should follow these guidelines.
Admission to certain high-demand majors within the A. James Clark School of Engineering involves a competitive review process for students completing the gateway requirements. Students applying to these high-demand majors are not guaranteed admission after completing gateway requirements and will undergo a major-specific holistic review. The high-demand majors in the Clark School of Engineering are as follows:
Other engineering majors are non-competitive for transfer students, meaning that students who meet the minimum gateway course requirements will be admitted into their chosen major. These majors include:
Students applying to the University of Maryland from other institutions apply to LEPs through the general application for admission to the University by indicating their major of interest. Students are first reviewed for admission to the University, and then, if admitted, are reviewed for admission to Limited Enrollment Program majors based on LEP standards.
Review process for high-demand majors: Transfer students applying to Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering must have completed all gateway admission requirements by the Early Action transfer application deadline in order to be reviewed for admission to the major. Students must successfully complete the Gateway requirements before applying and will undergo a competitive review process for admission to the major. Meeting the gateway course grade and GPA requirements does not guarantee admission to the major. Applicants will be notified of their admission decision in late April for fall and late October for spring. Students who are not admitted to their chosen major, but who meet the minimum gateway admission requirements, will be placed into General Engineering and may choose to declare an engineering major that is not high-demand.
Review process for other engineering majors: Applicants who have completed all required Gateway courses at the time of their application are notified of their admission decision in late April for fall admission and late October for spring admission. Students applying to majors that are not considered high demand may apply with gateway courses in progress. Students who are in the process of completing the required Gateways at the time of their application are notified of their admission decision to the university at the previously mentioned times but will be notified about the major decision after the semester has ended and final grades for the semester have been calculated. Students should be sure to send their final transcript from their previous institution if they are taking classes at the time of application.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the University of Maryland and all other institutions is required for internal and external transfer students.

Students currently attending the University of Maryland who wish to switch to an LEP or add an LEP as a second major can submit an LEP application through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The LEP application is made available following the add/drop deadline of each semester. Internal transfer students should complete the application either during the semester in which they complete the required gateway courses or at the end of the semester. This timeline is dependent upon the application deadline for the student’s preferred major. When previewing the application prior to submission, you will see all portions of the online application form, including those not relevant to the program for which you are applying. This is to be expected and will not impact your application provided you completed the sections relevant to your desired LEP major.
Review process for high-demand majors: Current UMD students who wish to declare Aerospace Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering must successfully complete the Gateway requirements and submit the LEP application. This process applies to any student currently pursuing an engineering major (including General Engineering) who wishes to change into one of our high-demand engineering majors or add one of our high-demand majors as a double major or double degree. Applicants must successfully complete the Gateway requirements before applying and will undergo a selective review process for admission to the major. Meeting the gateway course grade and GPA requirements does not guarantee admission to the major. Academic record, co-curricular involvement, STEM-related research experience or personal projects, and honors and awards are considered in the admission decision. Students who are not admitted to their desired major, but who meet the minimum gateway admission requirements, will be placed into General Engineering and may choose to declare an engineering major that is not high-demand.
Review process for other engineering majors: Internal transfer students applying for the spring semester must successfully complete the Gateway requirements before applying. Students applying for the fall semester are able to complete a gateway course during the summer, either at UMD or another institution. In order to be considered, courses must be taken during UMD’s Summer 1 Session. If the course is taken at another institution, it must be completed by the end of July.

All students accepted directly as freshman into the Clark School of Engineering must complete a series of gateway courses and a review at 45 credits.
